Secure HTTPS connection - why your site will go down in search results without it

27.01.2017

Google cares about the security of its users, which means that sooner or later you still have to install HTTPS, even if you really don’t want to. At the beginning of the year, Google representatives moved from words to deeds: now HTTPS is not a recommendation, but a necessity.

It would seem, why HTTPS informational sites? After all, protecting user data means protecting bank information, card numbers and passport data. But here, too, personal information and passwords are entered - on those pages where registration is provided. Therefore, Google strongly recommends transferring at least these pages to a secure connection.

Otherwise, the site, of course, will not be blocked, but they will make it so that not everyone can get to it. Since on the pages of the site from the issuance there will be an inscription: “Suspicious site. We recommend you stop watching." The site owner will receive an email stating "security issues". But it’s better to be proactive – after all, today Google’s restrictions apply to all pages without exception, where users enter personal information. And it is an informational page or a basket of an online store - it does not matter.

Installation Features

So, in the foreseeable future, a user who enters your address without HTTPS may not get to the site. And traffic from mobile devices will especially decrease (and this is up to 30-50% of visitors daily). The result - you lose traffic and get the need for emergency changes. Of course, it's best not to do that. Moreover, Google plans to start marking all pages without HTTPS as insecure. Should you wait until the view restriction affects your resource?

Configuring HTTPS

There is a certain algorithm for installing HTTPS. You can entrust the reconfiguration to professionals, or you can go through it yourself. You can reconfigure it almost without losing traffic - and your site will be ranked higher by the search engine, because its information security will improve.

But before you start setting up, you need to purchase an SSL certificate for the site. You can choose the seller yourself, focusing on the price, but do not forget about Google's requirements for such a certificate - they must be fully met. In the certificate, it is desirable to indicate different information for each domain. Since the country, region, company name and owner's e-mail will be visible publicly. Or you can buy certificates for different domains from different sellers.

And after setting up, you need to check the security level of the site on Ssllabs.com: the score must be at least A- (green background) . Now information security is very important for sites, especially those that generate dense mobile traffic. And you should not ignore the requirements of Google, because the Google Chrome browser in December last year was used five times more often than Firefox, and 70 times more often than Opera.
